Some Sundays are for looking up CS Lewis quotes.
I may be a slight fangirl (we did name the eldest after him), but there is just something about his words and ideas, heart issues and God-wonderings that gives me hope I'm on the right track after all.
And I'm not the only one.
The @CSLewisDaily twitter feed has over 1 million followers. In fact, there are no less than a dozen - probably more - twitter accounts attributed to his work. You'll find blogs dedicated to him, websites promoting him, his foundation, college, training and volunteerism. Goodreads hosts 90 pages of quotes credited to him. And my own bookcase is full of him.
Here's just a sampling of my very favourites:
"Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.” Mere Christianity
"She's the sort of woman who lives for others - you can tell the others by their hunted expression." The Screwtape Letters
"Enemy-occupied territory--that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us to take part in a great campaign of sabotage." Mere Christianity
"The first demand any work of art makes upon us is to surrender. Look. Listen. Receive. Get yourself out of the way." An Experiment in Criticism
"I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer. Till that word can be dug out of us, why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?" Till We Have Faces
"When He died in the Wounded World He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less." Perelandra
"But courage, child: we are all between the paws of the true Aslan.” The Last Battle
Are you a CS Lewis groupie? What are your favourite quotes, books or resources?
